Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are expected to open lower today, Friday, August 8, following weak global cues, with GIFT Nifty trading near 24,653 earlier this morning.
The domestic equity market is likely to start the final trading session of the week in the red after US President Donald Trump ruled out any trade negotiations with New Delhi until the ongoing tariff dispute is resolved. Notably, Trump has imposed a cumulative 50% tariff on Indian exports to the US.
On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 80623.26 up by 79.27 points or by 0.1 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24596.15 up by 21.95 points or by 0.09 %.
On the global front, Markets in Asia-Pacific traded mixed on Friday, following a choppy session on Wall Street where two of the three major US indices gave back earlier gains and closed lower.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.18 per cent, while the broader Topix index advanced 1.42 per cent, reaching a record high of 3,031.78. In contrast, South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.13 per cent, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.29 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 0.59 per cent.
Overnight in the US, Wall Street ended on a mixed note. The broader S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both closed lower, down 0.10 per cent and 0.50 per cent respectively, as shares of Eli Lilly fell following disappointing data from its oral weight-loss drug. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite defied the trend, closing at a record high with a gain of 0.30 per cent.
