L&T's renewables arm secures major order for BESS-Integrated solar plant in Bihar

Larsen & Toubro’s Renewables business has secured a significant engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) order to develop a 116 MWac grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 241 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kajra in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district.

This project builds on an earlier phase, bringing the total co-located storage capacity at the site to 495 MWh—making it the largest such project awarded by a state utility in India. The integration of a 4-hour BESS with intermittent solar generation will allow for energy time-shifting, enabling the storage of excess clean energy and its dispatch during peak demand periods.

The BESS will incorporate advanced liquid cooling technology, designed to enhance power density, improve safety, and extend the system’s operational lifespan. This project supports the Government of India’s push for co-located renewable energy and storage solutions, while also aligning with Bihar’s Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan, which focuses on water conservation, environmental sustainability, and rural development.

In addition to this project, L&T’s Renewables vertical had earlier secured an EPC order for a 275 MW solar PV plant in Gujarat, further strengthening its portfolio of efficient, flexible, and cost-effective clean energy solutions.
